It is difficult for today’s students of archaeology to imagine an era when chronometric dating methods were unavailable. However, even a casual perusal of the large body of literature that arose during the first half of the twentieth century reveals a battery of clever methods used to determine the relative ages of archaeological phenomena, often with considerable precision. Stratigraphic excavation is perhaps the best known of the various relative-dating methods used by prehistorians. Although there are several techniques of using artifacts from superposed strata to measure time, these are rarely if ever differentiated. Rather, common practice is to categorize them under the heading `stratigraphic excavation’. This text distinguishes among the several techniques and argues that stratigraphic excavation tends to result in discontinuous measures of time – a point little appreciated by modern archaeologists. Although not as well known as stratigraphic excavation, two other methods of relative dating have figured important in Americanist archaeology: seriation and the use of index fossils. The latter (like stratigraphic excavation) measures time discontinuously, while the former – in various guises – measures time continuously. Perhaps no other method used in archaeology is as misunderstood as seriation, and the authors provide detailed descriptions and examples of each of its three different techniques. Each method and technique of relative dating is placed in historical perspective, with particular focus on developments in North America, an approach that allows a more complete understanding of the methods described, both in terms of analytical technique and disciplinary history. This text will appeal to all archaeologists, from graduate students to seasoned professionals, who want to learn more about the backbone of archaeological dating. more info

Arlene Weisz and Beverly Black interview practitioners from more than fifty dating violence and sexual assault programs across the United States to provide a unique resource for effective teen dating violence prevention. Enhancing existing research with the shared wisdom of the nation’s prevention community, Weisz and Black describe program goals and content, recruitment strategies, membership, structure, and community involvement in practitioners’ own words. Their comprehensive approach reveals the core techniques that should be a part of any successful prevention program, including theoretical consistency, which contributes to sound content development, and peer education and youth leadership, which empower participants and keep programs relevant.

Weisz and Black show that multisession programs are most useful in preventing violence and assault, because they enable participants to learn new behaviors and change entrenched attitudes. Combining single- and mixed-gender sessions, as well as steering discussions away from the assignment of blame, also yield positive results. The authors demonstrate that productive education remains sensitive to differences in culture and sexual orientation and includes experiential exercises and role-playing. Manuals help in guiding educators and improving evaluation, but they should also allow adolescents to direct the discussion. Good programs regularly address teachers and parents. Ultimately, though, Weisz and Black find that the ideal program retains prevention educators long after the apprentice stage, encouraging self-evaluation and new interventions based on the wisdom that experience brings.

The frog and the prince in the title of the book are metaphors for either a healthy relationship experience or its opposite. Frog or Prince provides the reader with information on the mechanics of a relationship–how relationships work, why to get in, and how to get out–and a list of needs that any young woman deserves to get met in a relationship. The book provides tools–a bar, a hurt list and a prince/frog list–to help the reader learn more about herself and her needs. The concept of respect–self-respect, respect for others and the expectation to be treated respectfully–is threaded throughout the book and is the key for a young woman to continue to build self-esteem within the context of her relationship.

Every girl dreams of living happily ever after with her Prince– but how do you tell a Prince from a Frog? This book follows Natalie, Meghan, Ella and Elizabeth through their relationships, as they gain the skills to determine if the guy they’re with is the right guy for them. As the girls’ stories unfold, we follow along as they start to recognize and reject Frogs, and/or recognize, accept and build a relationship with their Prince. Meghan falls in love with Jordan and uses the Prince/Frog tool to get herself out of a Frog trap. Ella begins to trust her instincts and kicks her guy to the curb. Natalie breaks the cycle of moving from one bad relationship to another. Elizabeth learns to recognize a Prince. A reviewer said it is an opportunity for the reader to identify with one or all of the four girls–Natalie, Meghan, Elizabeth and Ella–who each discover who they are or who they become when they are with their guy. more info

In Dating Acts, Richard Pervo subjects the scholarly consensus that Acts was written about 80-85 C.E. to a rigorous scholarly examination. Analyzing the author s sources, methods, theology, familiarity with ecclesiastical developments and vocabulary, Pervo discovers that the author of Acts is familiar with the later writings of Josephus (c. 100 C.E.) and that the theological perspectives of Acts have much in common with elements found in the Pastoral Epistles and Polycarp (c. 125-130). He also situates the book of Acts in terms of its place in the development of early Christianity and its social and ideological context, and shows how a second-century date helps to interpret it. more info
