Invisible barriers- dog training

March 3, 2011 by

Tutorial coming soon… Using clicker training, and without using positive punishment, you can teach dogs reliable complex behaviors like teaching a default “don’t take a step off the grassy area unless released”. Splash is demoing how she generalizes don’t step off the grass in two locations where I have never trained her to do it. I only trained her in front of my house, and another location, but as you can see she generalized it to the canyon area near the park because it doesnt have ‘grass’ (or at least that is what I think). The day that I film this I actually WANTED her to go and get the frisbee for me when I did a crappy throw, but she would not leave the grass, and I had to go and walk my lazy self down there in the bushes to get the frisbee. I was very impressed with her generalization skills so I picked up the camera and filmed a “fake” bad throw. However, with most dogs you would have to go to a few locations to train, before they would generalize it to all locations.

Barking Episode 4- Barking at Strangers- Dog training

This dog training video outlines a plan for beginning to counter condition a dog to certain types of people that a dog becomes reactive to. This video can also be used as a way to socialize young puppies to weird things in the environment. Another useful application of these exercises would be for a dog and handler team practicing to take a Canine Good Citizen test, as well as proofing a Therapy dog or Service dog for all types of situations they might encounter while on the job. It is very common for dogs to become reactive to anything out of the ordinary. We have selectively bred them to be this way. Many dogs will become reactive or show fear to stimuli such as a weird hat, a cane, a walker, a stroller, a person with bags, a big jacket, strange movement and anything that changes a persons profile. You can set up training games to change your dogs emotional response from fear or arousal to calm friendliness using counter conditioning. Watch this video to check out what you can do. ——– Another thing you can do to speed up the process, is to leave these scary items around in your house for the dog to habituate to and investigate. You can also wear them. If your dog is fearful of people with gloves, wear gloves when you watch TV in the evening every once in a while. Put on a different scary item before you put down your dogs dinner bowl. ——- If at any point the dog were to become reactive, simply say ‘let’s go’ to the dog, and when the dog has stopped reacting you

Secret dog training tip- teaching ‘back up’ for leash walking

February 23, 2011 by

This is another cool Dogmantics Dog Training Tip on how to teach your dog to walk next to you on a loose leash. If you are consistent with this behavior, you can actually make pressure on the leash a CUE for the dog to back up and they learn to walk on a loose leash as a default. =—- Teaching a dog to back up into the heel position on walks is helpful for many reasons. 1- If you have more than one dog on a walk sometimes it can be hard to turn around and go the other way if both dogs are ahead of you. Teaching them to back into the heel position allows you to move freely 2- If you train your dog that when he reaches the end of the leash the only way he can move forwards again is to back up, he will consciously start avoiding hitting the end of the leash. This means- No more pulling on leash. 3- This is a great impulse control exercise based on the Premack Principle. In order to move forwards you must first move backwards. —- Loose leash walking obedience without force how to train a dog without using punishment clicker training dog training walking in heel how to teach backing up on leash How to train a puppy to walk next to you . Paw Targeting – how to teach tricks dog training clicker training

This video is a how to video on how to teach your dog to target an object with his front paws. This is not only a great game to teach your puppy or dog how to learn to learn, but it is the foundation for many behaviors and tricks. Tricks with this foundation include- wave, shake , high five, standing up, hands up, close the door, cop cop, say your prayers, descrimination, freestyle foot work and more. Check out zsianz1 ‘s video on how to teach a high five using this technique! www.youtube.com Take care with large breed dogs or dogs who have sharp toe nails as you can get slapped. Perhaps teach shake down the line when you have more experience as a trainer so that your large dog doesnt learn to paw at you as their favorite behavior. The great thing about the technique that I am using is that the dog isnt learning to paw at your skin, but at an object, so you can get that on stimulus control before it is just your arm (for very large and powerful dog breeds). You can also click them fore being gentle before you switch to using just your hand for shake.

What is clicker training? Clicker training is a way of training animals in which desirable behavior is marked with a sound maker and then reinforced, making the behavior more likely to happen in the future. Who can use clicker training? People of all ages! What animals can be clicker trained? All animals, young or old. All species and breeds, small or large. Clicker training creates strong reliable behaviors, and is a great way of modifying behavior- solving shyness, reactivity and aggression. It is also a ethical way to bond with your companion animal as you train the animal to want to do what you want them to do, rather than physically or psychologically intimidating the animal to do what you want.
