Twitter, the social networking site, in many ways defies description. It’s been referred to as a micro blogging site and a community IM (Instant Messaging) tool. Take note of the word “community” – with Twitter you post “tweets” that are up to 140 characters in length, and by default, unless you’ve protected your twitter account, are visible to everyone on the internet.
Everyone.
Many people using Twitter will include their email address in a tweet – perhaps letting others know how to reach them to continue a conversation or send a message that just doesn’t fit in 140 characters. Unfortunately including your email address in a tweet is a very bad idea. The reason is a very simple and age-old (in internet terms) problem: spam.
By default, everyone can see your all tweets. This is one of the driving forces behind Twitter – making posts visible to anyone. Unfortunately, that includes spammers.
Much like spammers harvest email addresses from web pages, they’ve begun harvesting from Twitter tweets as well. In fact, every tweet is available as a web page itself, so the spammers don’t really even have to do that much additional work; they just scan Twitter – web pages or feeds – for anything that looks like an email address. Once they find one they add it to their database of email addresses to spam.
Even if your Twitter account is “protected” (only people who you approve can see your tweets directly) you’re still at risk. The practice of “retweeting”, or essentially reposting your original tweet, can make your information visible to everyone once again.
You can see this all for yourself: go to http://search.twitter.com and search for “@hotmail.com”. All the recent tweets that include “@hotmail.com” will be displayed. Many, if not most of these will be Hotmail email addresses. Even if simply obscured by a dash or other simple separator between the email name and @hotmail.com, a small piece of software that scans, corrects and collects these email addresses is a goldmine for spammers.

Twitter is a fantastic way to promote your products online. But, you need to make sure that you use the platform in the way it was intended to be used. Part of the beauty of Twitter is that it can be many things to many people. As part of my effort to recruit as many people to Twitter as possible, I decided that I should write posts about how Twitter can be used in different situations. For example, of course you can just use Twitter to make plans with your friends, but the interactivity of Twitter can be very useful for people in all sorts of different professions. I’m going to attempt to come up with as many different uses for it as I can and I’m going to start with the one I feel (for better or worse) qualified the most to talk about: using Twitter to promote your band or music.
Your Fans Really Do Care What You’re Doing
Believe it or not, if you’ve been making music for a while, you’ve probably accumulated a not-insignificant group of fans who are interested in what you do on a daily basis. These are the fans that download all your songs (whether you want them to or not), go to all your shows and buy all your t-shirts. Every band has these, no matter how long you’ve been around or how bad your music is. These are the people that you can cater to with Twitter.
I suggest updating at least twice a day. Once when you get up you should post what you’re going to be doing that day, whether or not it’s related to your music, and once when your day is done to let them know how it went. Believe me, if Cedric and Omar from The Mars Volta or Daft Punk were on Twitter, you better believe I would be following them and would get super excited whenever they updated, even if it was just to let me know that they were eating a bowl of Cheerios.
Promoting Your Shows
Twitter can be an extremely effective promotional tool because you can ask people to come to your shows on several different occasions. If you are booking a tour, I suggest updating on Twitter when the dates are finalized and linking to the posted dates on your web site. Also, the day before the show, as well as the day of, you can update reminding everyone to come out to see you.
If you have enough fans and followers, you could make them feel extra special by having exclusive shows or afterparties that you only mention on Twitter. Once your fans find out that you are having these secret events, they will start following you on Twitter, thereby increasing your reach.

You get free promotion, they get to come to your show for free and their followers check out your new song. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
This is really just scratching the surface of how musicians can leverage Twitter to build their brand, increase their audience and get more people to hear their music. I’m sure as time goes on and more and more bands adopt Twitter the way they did MySpace, we’ll see some really innovative ways to use Twitter, but these ideas should be enough to get you started. First of all, a word of warning: Twitter, and all of Social Media, is not the Holy Grail. They are tools, just like anything else. Your Twitter List
It’s a little a funny when people ask me “Can Twitter help you build your list?” Usually I ask “Do you have any Twitter followers?” When they answer yes I point out that your Twitter followers are part of your list – your Twitter list.
I guess some folks think that just because someone from their Twitter followers is not on their email list means they are not a part of your list community. This could not be further from the truth.
Your Twitter followers (your Twitter list community) is a viable list that is just as important as your email list, and in many ways more so. With your Twitter list you do not have to worry about spam filters and you can communicate with your Twitter followers several times a day.

Planning on how to run a Twitter marketing campaign requires, first, the assumption that you want to run a successful Twitter marketing campaign. You do NOT want to be viewed as a spammer or as an annoying pest.
Thus you must plan a marketing campaign that actually does little selling and more connecting. Why? Because this “laid-back” strategy on Twitter is more likely to get you loyal followers interested in what you have to offer.
Let’s look at an imaginary Twitter marketing campaign scenario:
You join Twitter and immediately start tweeting only about your products and services. Every time someone follows you, you send that person a DM (direct message) with a link to one of your sales pages. You use an application to automatically bring your blog feed into your Twitter account, and every one of your blog posts focuses solely on pushing your products and services.
How many people do you think will be interested in continuing to follow you and clicking on your links?
Twitter is effective for marketing purposes only when you realize it is NOT about sales but that it is about relationships.
A different imaginary Twitter marketing campaign scenario:
This time you join Twitter with a marketing strategy in place. You find and follow people who might be interested in what you have to offer but at this point you do NOT tell them about your products and services.
If you still want to send a DM when someone first follows you (which in my opinion is not necessary), make it a personal appreciation for connecting without pushing any of your sales page links. If you really want to include a link, make it to a free report.
In your general tweets you share links to worthwhile articles that relate to your products and services. These articles do not have to be your own; in fact, sometimes they should be to other people’s material.
Then every so often you throw in a tweet about a product or service of yours and include a link. But even in this case what you say can make a difference:

Buy my super-duper widget right now and you’ll make tons of money in 30 days. You can tweet:
Check out my new widget training program – it can help you attract more visitors to your website.
See how the second tweet is much less selling and much more sharing?
Now if you’ve been sharing worthwhile information connected to this topic, people following you will be more inclined to click on the link because these people are already conditioned to trust you. You’ve established this trust by providing these people with valuable free information on the topic.
In conclusion, take the perspective of your potential clientele/customers in order to run an effective Twitter marketing campaign: Not constantly tweeting about how great your products and services are; instead constantly tweeting to provide information that will help solve their problems.
And occasionally you can tweet that the products and services you’re selling are the solution to those problems.
